A sensitive refurbishment & extension of a Grade II listed townhouse

The project refurbished a derelict Grade II Listed House and added a sensitive extension to create space for a kitchen and dining spaces opening onto the rear garden.

Working on a very restricted site, the original layout of the building was retained and the surviving fabric refurbished to sit alongside considered modern interventions designed to maximise the space and make it suitable for modern living. We were able to unlock the potential of the building by understanding what had come before. A research project established the date of construction of the building and the series of subsequent adaptation works carried out in the late 20th Century and by employing a process of ‘constructive demolition’ we were able to make informed proposals for the removal of some of these works to re-reveal elements of the historic structure and propose an appropriate small-scale lightweight extension as a contemporary counterpoint.
